USDA announces improved nutrition standards for school meals
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, together with First Lady Michelle Obama, announced improved nutrition standards for school meals on January 25, 2012. The new requirements, part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, are the first updates to make school breakfasts and lunches healthier in more than 15 years.

President Signs Law to Overhaul School Meals
President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (S.3307) on December 13, 2010, giving food in schools a nutritional overhaul. The legislation includes a number of recommendations from the IOM report School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children.

School Meal Providers Pledge to Meet IOM Nutrition Standards
In February 2010, food service companies ARAMARK, Sodexo, and Chartwells, who provide students with breakfasts and lunches at schools across the U.S., announced they would meet the IOM's recommended school meal standards for fat, sugar, whole grains, and sodium.
